I have no shame in saying I love to geek out – yep I am that annoying one in front of class or the factory tour crowd asking a million questions. I’ve gathered many years of PA + ID tips and nuggets of knowledge from what to do or not to do again. I do enjoy learning new things and sharing tips with my colleagues. I'm thrilled to continue to help and share – enjoy!

I will start with what I learned when I was a intern/jr designer!

SEED 1:

How to convert yards to leather? 1yd (54" solid goods) = 18sf of leather

Yardage Estimator

The following figures represent the approximate yards of 54" material and square footage of leather based upon 1 YD = 18 Sq. Ft. needed to upholster the type of furniture shown.

1 YD = 36"x54" = 1944 Sq. In. / 144 Sq. In. (12"x12") = 13.5 Sq. Ft - Order 18 Sq. Ft. - Diff = Loss Factor.

With small hides, cutting pieces should be specified to obtain square footage. As a rule of thumb, 2 1/2 YDS=45 S.F. per liner foot.

1 YD. = 18 S.F.

2 YDS. = 36 S.F.

3 YDS. = 54 S.F.

4 YDS. = 72 S.F.

5 YDS. = 90 S.F.

6 YDS. = 108 S.F.

7 YDS. = 126 S.F.

8 YDS. = 144 S.F.

9 YDS. = 162 S.F.

10 YDS. = 180 S.F.

11 YDS. = 198 S.F.

12 YDS. = 216 S.F.

13 YDS. = 234 S.F.

14 YDS. = 252 S.F.

15 YDS. = 270 S.F.

16 YDS. = 288 S.F.

17 YDS. = 306 S.F.

18 YDS. = 324 S.F.

19 YDS. = 342 S.F.

20 YDS. = 360 S.F.

21 YDS. = 378 S.F.

22 YDS. = 396 S.F.
